PED set up for the first time

⚠️Important: This article is only for stand-alone devices being connected for the first time. This article does not cover linking Tru-link PEDs into the system for the first time.

Before you start ensure you have the manager or admin password to hand. This is the last six digits of your POS Merchant ID or a default setting. This would have been provided on your Merchant Setup from Trust Payments and also on the 'Confirmation of Go-Live' email from the GuestPay onboarding team.

The Portable Terminal - Overview

  • The Portable terminal is designed as two pieces of hardware, handset and base unit.

  • The Handset unit features a contactless reader, WiFi, GRPS modem. There are additional power connection and USB ports on the handset unit to allow the handset unit to be operated alone.

  • Wired connections like power, modem, ethernet, USB or serial are located on the base unit.

The Portable Terminal - Adding the printer roll

To add or change the printer roll, follow the steps below:

  1. Pull the paper roll handle, as shown in the diagram below, to open.

  2. Gently open the paper roll.

  3. Insert the paper roll, as per the diagram below:

  4. Firmly close the Paper roll handle.

⚠️Important: Till rolls can be purchased from Trust Payments online store, and need to have a width of 57mm, and an outside diameter of 40mm.

The Portable Terminal - Connecting to your Wi-fi

To connect the PED to your Wi-Fi on-site, follow the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the power button for two seconds, to power on the terminal.

  2. On the PED main screen, select the Quick Menu (nine-dot menu icon).

  3. Select Networks, and then select Settings. The PED will now scan for Wi-Fi networks.

  4. Select your required Wi-Fi network and enter the network password for your Wifi network.

⚠️Important: Ensure the network is a closed network, rather than a guest or public access network.

Once connection has been completed, please complete a Handshake via the nine-dot quick menu.

If your PED has not connected to Wi-Fi previously and is failing to make a connection, we would encourage you to read "Best Practice guide for network setup" and share it with your IT teams, just to eliminate any firewall concerns which could be blocking the connection.

The Portable Terminal - Connecting to your mobile data or GPRS

To install the SIM card, follow the steps below:

  • Power the terminal off.

  • Remove the rear cover (two clips at the top).

  • Insert the SIM into the SIM 1 slot at the lower right corner (follow the insertion profile shown by the slot).

  • Re-attach the cover (ensuring the clips are snapped into place).

  • Power up the device.

  • When prompted, type in the APN supplied by the SIM provider using the keypad.

To select the mobile data/GPRS internet connection, follow the steps below:

  1. On the PED main screen, select the nine dot quick menu.

  2. Select Networks.

  3. Select Change Connection, then select Mobile Data.

πŸ“ŒNote: For our mobile devices, it might ask you for an APN code – this will be mobius.m2m.

Once connection has been completed, complete a Handshake via the nine dot quick menu.

The Portable Terminal - Software Update

Automatic software updates are pushed out to PEDs overnight, it is therefore imperative that terminals are left powered on in the charging cradles and the terminal is online. However, should you need to, you can manually update the terminal.

To complete a manual update, follow the steps below:

  1. On the PED main screen, select Menu, then select Administrator.

  2. When prompted, enter the Manager Password and tap the Green Tick.

πŸ“ŒNote: Contact a manager on-site if you are unsure of this six digit code.

  3. Select Software Update

  4. The terminal will now connect and start updating the latest release and reboot.

  5. Each version is downloaded individually therefore please repeat these steps multiple times until you receive the message 'your software is up to date'.

⚠️Important: The minimum version for Tru-link is 0401.144122.

To confirm the software version of your terminal, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the nine-dot Quick Menu.

  2. Select Version. Compare this to the version listed above.

The Portable Terminal - Locating your terminal ID (TID) and Serial Number (S/N)

You may need to provide your Terminal ID (TID) and Serial Number (S/N) to help identify your specific terminal.

To find the Terminal ID (TID) and Serial Number (S/N) on your PED, follow the steps below:

  1. From the main screen of the PED, tap the Quick Menu (9-dot menu in the bottom right of the screen).

  2. Tap the Version button.

  3. The version information is shown - including the TID and S/N number.

πŸ“ŒNote: The TID can also be found at the top of a receipt from that specific PED.

Your terminals are now ready to use.
